Past Continuous Tense vs. Past Simple: The Mysterious Stalker (Suspense ...

Past Simple 

- regular (-ed) and irregular verbs (must know the list by heart);
- In the negative and interrogative Did must be used as an auxiliary verb and the main verb stays in the infinitive;
- used for actions that started and finished in the past.


Examples:

+ She went to the supermarket last night.

- During the weekend they didn't study enough for the test.

? Did he play football one year ago?


Expressions connected with this verb tense:

ago, last (week, month, year), yesterday...

Past Continuous 

- WAS (singular)/ WERE (plural) + Verb + -ing

- used for actions that were occurring in a determined moment in the past


Examples:

+ She was reading her book last night.

- During the weekend they were camping in the south of the country.

? Were you cooking when I came in?
