10 graders: Passive Voice

Passive Voice 


Remember this:

a) BE + Past Participle;

b) Firstly, identify the verb tense of the active sentence;

c) Build the sentence in the passive, writing the auxiliary verb to be in the tense of the active sentence.

Examples:
                         Active Voice                                                Passive Voice

Pres. Simple: Mariana drinks the chocolate milk.
Pres. Contin.: Helena is drinking chocolate milk.
Simple Past: Jordan drank chocolate milk.
Past Conti.: Junior was drinking chocolate milk.

Present Perfect: Diogo has drunk chocolate milk.
Past Perfect: Bruna had drunk chocolate milk.
Present Perfect Continuous: it isn't used in the passive. 
Future “will”: João will drink chocolate milk.
Future “Be going to”: José isn’t going to drink chocolate milk.
Modal verb: Should Joana drink chocolate milk?

The chocolate milk is drunk by Mariana.

The chocolate milk is being drunk  by Helena.

The chocolate milk was drunk by Jordan.
The chocolate milk was being drunk by Junior.
The chocolate milk has been drunk by Diogo.

The chocolate milk had been drunk by Bruna.


The chocolate milk will be drunk by João.
The chocolate milk isn’t going to be drunk by José.
Should the chocolate milk be drunk by Joana?

 Why do  we use the passive voice?

-Don’t know the agent’s identity
-Not important to mention the agent of the action
-Want to avoid the agent of the action. (journalism)
-Focus on the action

Write the sentences given in the Passive Voice.

a) Gonçalo and Duarte write the newspaper articles.

And now try these:


PASSIVE VOICE with 2 objects

Sometimes we have sentences where you have a "who" and a "what". For instance:

Sousa and Rita bought a book to Carolina yesterday.
book - what - direct object
Carolina - who - indirect object

This means that you can build 2 Passive sentences! 
One of them begins with the direct object and the other with the indirect object.

a) A book was bought to Carolina yesterday.

b) Carolina was given a book by Sousa and Rita yesterday.
