PASSIVE VOICE with 2 objects

Sometimes we have sentences where you have a "who" and a "what". For instance:

Lin and Val bought a book for Sara yesterday.
book - what - direct object
Sara - to whom - indirect object

This means that you can build 2 Passive sentences!
One of them begins with the direct object and the other with the indirect object.

a) A book was bought for Sara yesterday.

b) Sara was bought a book by Val and Lin yesterday.

Extensive Reading Project 2021/22

  10, 11, and 12 graders - Extensive Reading Project 2021/22

During the second term, you are going to present to the class the book you have chosen to read. You should present it at the beginning of January. (in order to avoid stressful moments in March).

PAY ATTENTION to this:

You are going to have up to 15' / 25' to present your work.

You must speak about 5/6 main topics: (you can add more topics if you consider them to be crucial to the understanding of your story).

(you must take into account that you are not texting to classmates; you are presenting a book in a more formal context.)

These topics are to guide you. You do not need to have this order. Remember that you may add topics you consider fundamental.

1) The story in general (summary of the story)
read some of the passages  that were important to the story

2) Main characters
- explain their main characteristics
read some passages which show the behaviour of the characters you chose to speak about

3) Moment of the story you most or/and least enjoyed
- read the passage(s)

4)  Show your classmates three expressions you have learned with the reading of your story. Your classmates must write them down in their notebooks.

5) Explain why would you recommend (or not) the book

6) As a plus you can also speak about the writer and the time when he or she lived in. Moreover, you can bring music, objects, etc. which might help you to involve your class.

Some advice: (PLEASE READ THEM ATTENTIVELY)

1/
a) Remember that you have several platforms to use in your presentation (rather than PPT or Prezi), for instance:  Genial.ly,  Spark, Padlet or create a Blog.

Whatever platform you choose to present your work in, remember that you should have pictures or keywords instead of text in your slides.

2/
You can bring objectsmusic, or other elements that might help/ enrich your presentation.

3/
Do not panic during your presentation. If you cannot remember what you have to say, simply say that you need a moment and carry on.

4/
Rehearsing is fundamental. Present your work at home alone, to your siblings, to your mum, or to your dad. By the time you get to class, you are completely secure and ready to present your book!

5/
Eat well for morning breakfast! It is important to be 100% ready!!

Mixed conditionals

                                    If + Past Perfect (had+past participle), Would (n't) + infinitive

UseThis type of mixed conditional refers to an unreal past condition and its probable result in the present.

Example:

If I had written a list, then I would buy everything I needed.

If + Past Simple, Would (not) have + past participle+ infinitive

UseTo talk about the past result of an unreal or hypothetical present situation.

Example:

If I were definitely more organised, I would have made a chart with all the tasks I must complete.

Here's a video that might be helpful:

And, of course, after theory, let's have a look at some practice:

At the end of this page, you have a To Do part. Four simple exercises to help you check your knowledge: https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/course/towards-advanced/unit-7/session-1

Listening Test are coming soon! Get yourself ready!!

 Here are some pieces of advice for you to face Listening Tests:

Tips:

- In each exercise firstly read the exercise and underline key expressions;

- While listening use your pencil "to guide" your attention;

- Look attentively at the paper the teacher gives you, only in the end you write your answers in your answer sheet;

- If you do not know one answer leave it (you will listen one more time);

- The second time you listen is to check your answers and complete those you left behind;

- After you listen the second time, if you do not know the answer, try to guess (do not leave it unanswered);

- At the end of your listening, you have 5 minutes to copy your answers onto the answer sheet - without scratching.

Wish you the best of luck!
